In an article on December 11, Nature introduced ResearchHub’s platform, which pays peer reviewers who independently review new research papers the equivalent of $150 in cryptocurrency.

Nature pointed out in its article that this has also proved to be an economic opportunity for some people—particularly mentioning Pedro Paulo Gattai Gomes, a molecular biology consultant in São Paulo. He said that he now makes more money reviewing papers for ResearchHub than when he was a professor at an academic institution.

The scientist said he reviews an average of 15 papers a month and receives $150 worth of ResearchHub’s ResearchCoin (RSC) tokens for each review. He told the journal: “Paid review is just, because in my opinion, it is very unfair to work for free without even a word of thanks.”
